The seminar gives an introduction to the most important concepts of logic: premises and conclusions of arguments, validity and soundness of arguments, deductive vs. inductive reasoning, common types of inferences and fallacies. Career Options Outside Academia

The course will focus on opportunities for a career outside of academia, since not all scientific employees can or want to stay in this field. For this purpose, insights into the business and industry sector will be provided, but perspectives in the public sector and NGOs will also be considered. The focus is also on the requirements of typical career paths and the questions of how promising these are and what one typically has to do to achieve them. AI & Research Integrity: What to do and what to avoid

New technologies cause uncertainty – this is especially true for Artificial Intelligence (AI). Meanwhile, researchers find a huge array of AI-based tools at their disposal with new opportunities emerging almost daily. Our rulebooks on good research practice can hardly keep up with this development. Accordingly, many questions arise: Can I use AI tools for my dissertation? Should I make it transparent, which AI tools I use and, if so, how? How shall I document the use of AI? When publishing, can AI assist me or even be an author? After a short introduction to generative AI we will address these questions from the perspective of good research practice. We will introduce what different research integrity guidelines have to say regarding the proper use of AI and what this implies for your thesis work. Agile Project Management

The course is intended to give a first insight into the world of agile (project) management and to show examples of its application for projects in academia and industry. Initially, a basic understanding of the concepts, ways of thinking and procedures of agile project management will be conveyed and an insight into the structure of Scrum will be given. Neben vielseitigen Basistools wie ChatGPT oder Gemini gibt es inzwischen eine Reihe von KI-Anwendungen, die speziell für den wissenschaftlichen Bereich entwickelt wurden. Dazu gehören hilfreiche Werkzeuge für die Literaturrecherche und -auswertung, zur Unterstützung von Feedbackprozessen sowie zur Überarbeitung und zum sprachlichen Feinschliff von Texten. Der Workshop nähert sich dem Thema aus verschiedenen Perspektiven. Zunächst werden wir uns anschauen, wie insbesondere sprachbasierte KI-Modelle funktionieren. Nur so lassen sich Ergebnisse richtig einordnen und kritisch bewerten. In einem zweiten Schritt werden wir verschiedene KI-Tools ausprobieren und unsere Erfahrungen mit den Tools in der Gruppe diskutieren. Critical Reasoning & Logic

In research, thinking clearly and seeing the logical relationships between ideas is as important as experiments and data. Nevertheless, the logical basics of correct reasoning are not part of the curricula for most university degrees. In this course we introduce basic concepts of logic such as validity and soundness and the distinction between inductive and deductive reasoning. The idea of the course is to use these concepts as a toolbox for various aspects of research. Participants learn techniques that help them identify strengths and weaknesses in arguments, structure texts optimally, and to state arguments clearly and precisely. During the course we apply the contents directly to the participants' research topics, for example in that we help them formulate precise research questions, explain the relevance of their research, and develop a clear argument structure for their texts or presentations.

Research and Writing with AI

AI tools for research and writing are currently the subject of controversial debate. The developments are rapid and confusing. In addition to versatile basic tools such as ChatGPT 4o, there are now a number of AI applications that have been developed specifically for the scientific field. These include helpful tools for literature research and evaluation, for supporting feedback processes and for revising and fine-tuning texts. The workshop approaches the topic from different angles. First of all, our aim is to gain a better understanding of how language-based AI models in particular work. This is the only way to assess results correctly and critically where appropriate. Secondly, we will try out various AI tools and jointly discuss them in our group. And finally, we will reflect on the potential of AI tools as an aid in scientific research and writing, but also on what limitations there are in dealing with AI
