WORKSHOP “Listening with machines, crafting transduction”, José Padovani (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais)
Listening with machines, crafting transductions: technodiversity, creative tools, and critical perspectives in research-creation practices
Workshop with: José Henrique Padovani
Technology is not neutral, and technical objects are not mere consumer goods. Far beyond simple gadgets, technical objects and techniques possess deep anthropological and imaginative dimensions; they act as extensions of the human body and mind by mediating our perceptions and actions in the world. This workshop invites participants to critically reflect on and practice processes defined as "machine listening" within the context of research-creation in music and sound arts. Mobilizing concepts such as transduction, technodiversity, and sonic inscription, we challenge epistemological stances that accept a "monotechnology" of listening. Instead, we propose a relational, contextual, and situated approach to sonic technologies. The second part of the workshop functions as a practical laboratory for sonic transcription and re-inscription. Participants are invited to bring audio materials—both human and non-human—relevant to their own contexts. Through custom analysis and processing tools, we will engage in poetic, exploratory, and critical workflows, investigating how unconventional interventions in the transduction chain can reveal new ways of listening and imagining with machines.
