Writing Abstracts for Journal Articles and Conference Papers

06.06.2023 | 09:00 - 13:00

During this training you will have learned and practiced helpful tools and techniques to writing abstracts for articles and conference papers.

Starting point: The abstract is often your prospective readers' first interaction with your work and is pivotal to the success of your paper. There are tools and techniques that support you in writing compelling abstracts in your field. Feedback from peers is also highly valuable.

Content: We will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding different types of abstracts

  • Considering what readers, editors and reviewers are looking for in an abstract

  • Learning about the hidden structures of abstracts and how to apply them

  • Discovering how to make writing more concise and how to edit an abstract for style

  • Writing abstracts and receiving feedback

Methods: Pair and small group work in breakout rooms, general discussion, individual feedback/coaching.

Note: During this training you will have the opportunity to put all you have learned into practice. Therefore, please bring a sample or samples of abstracts you have written or drafts you are working on. Please bring also some sample abstracts from journals you wish to publish in.

It is expected that participants are proficient in English.

You will receive the certificates of attendance after successful course participation (at least 80% active participation), as soon as possible. If you need the certificate earlier, please contact us!
