In the Media Archive of the Institute for Theater Studies

Scientific work with moving image media and its integration into research and teaching is a fundamental component of all disciplines at the institute.

The core task of the media laboratory is the media documentation and provision of performative audiovisual works (primarily recordings of historical theatre, dance and concert performances as well as TV recordings). We support multidisciplinary work, make collections visible for research purposes and enable in-depth engagement with them.

The media archive contains approximately 30,000 entries on theatre, film, dance and documentation. In-house recordings have been made since the early 1970s. The collection currently consists of more than 10,000 video tapes, approximately 9,000 DVDs and approximately 2,500 digital files.

Our collections are not open to the public. The inventory is accessible to employees and students of the institute as well as to members of related institutions in accordance with the terms of use.

The Media Lab also oversees all media technology equipment and practical media activities in teaching and research. This makes the Media Lab the point of contact for the media technology implementation of courses, colloquia and conferences.

The Media Lab is responsible for the administration and use of the media archive, the management of in-house audio and video production facilities, the organisation and implementation of practical media projects (video courses, performances, installations, theatre and film workshops) and the support of student practical projects.
