Daniel Dayan is Directeur de Recherche at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris; a fellow of the Marcel Mauss Institute (EHESS) and a Professor of Media Sociology at the University of Geneva. He holds degrees in Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Semiotics and Film Studies from Stanford University, La Sorbonne, and L'École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), where he received a Ph.D in Aesthetics.
