IN PROCESS – IN PROGRESS #07: Conversations About a Missing Film and Other Disappearances
Conversations about the present and future of the moving image. With Carine Doumit (Beirut) and Philip Widmann (Berlin).
Carine Doumit, a film editor and writer from Beirut, and Philip Widmann, a filmmaker from Berlin, converse on disappearing objects, their immaterial presence and persistence. Their starting point is Widmann’s research on the making and the loss of the first sound film produced in Lebanon. Central to their conversation are a shared interest in what constitutes a dialogue, its potential of shaping a project from within, and the use of voice and text in relation to the image. Moving backwards and forwards at the same time, they retrace their encounters while expanding on a network of blank, blind and neglected spots that may help framing the loss of the film.
Carine Doumit (born 1981) is an independent film editor and writer based in Beirut. Since 2005, her work embraces a variety of feature documentaries, film essays and experimental videos. She is also involved as writing and editing consultant with independent filmmakers and artists, as well as workshops and university programs. Recently, her focus has been the use of text in film essays. Her first literary essay [les épargnés – the spared ones] was published in 2015. She is currently working on a second publication, tentatively entitled [meine mutter träumt mich wieder – ma mère à nouveau me rêve].
Philip Widmann is a filmmaker, writer and programmer. He works on a dissertation on the political theory of landscape, focusing on films by Masao Adachi, Huillet/Straub and Gerhard Friedl. Recent films include A House in Ninh Hoa (2016) and Das Gestell (2017).
IN PROCESS – IN PROGRESS presents exchanges about ongoing projects between cinema and contemporary art. Two collaborating artists/filmmakers show footage and material, develop thoughts, perform their working process. Practice as theory; theory as practice.
