Center for Galician Studies

The Center for Galician Studies at the FU Berlin was founded in cooperation with the Galician General Secretariat for Language Policy. Its central tasks are the teaching, research and promotion of Galician language, literature and culture.

Dissemination of language and culture

The Galician language is the official language in Galicia, along with Spanish. It is also spoken in the neighboring regions of Castile and Leon, Asturias and Alto Trás-os-Montes in northern Portugal, and has a total of about 3 million speakers. The Galician language and culture are also maintained in communities in the diaspora, which are particularly extensive in some Latin American countries, such as Argentina, Cuba and Brazil. Within the EU, Galician has been one of the official languages since 2005.
