Diskursmarker wie Frz. bon, It. poi, oder Spanisch ahora bien werden gemeinhin als Elemente beschrieben, deren Funktion im Wesentlichen besteht, Äußerungen in einem Gespräch so zu verbinden, dass es kohärent wird. Die Verwendung von Diskursmarkern ist typisch für die gesprochene, informelle Sprache. Weiterhin können Diskursmarker ganz unterschiedlichen Wortarten angehören (Adverbien, Konjunktionen, Interjektionen, Adjektive oder feste Phrasen wie je pense). Vielen Linguist:innen zufolge ist der Erwerb von Diskursmarkern in einer Fremdsprache auch deshalb besonders schwierig; gleichzeitig werden Diskursmarker jedoch sehr selten überhaupt systematisch gelehrt. Ziel dieses Seminar ist erstens, systematisch das Inventar von Diskursmarkern in den großen romanischen Sprachen (Spanisch, Französisch, Italienisch, eventuell Portugiesisch) sowie ihren Wandel in der Sprachgeschichte zu erkunden. Zweitens sollen die Teilnehmer:innen in Kleingruppen selbstständig den Gebrauch dieser Diskursmarker in der Interaktion (Korpusdaten) erforschen. Ein dritter Fokus des Seminars liegt auf der Beschreibung von Prozessen des Erst- und Zweitspracherwerbs von Diskursmarkern sowie deren Status in der Sprachlehre.

Formale Grammatiktheorien wie die generative Grammatik nehmen an, dass grammatische Regeln unabhängig von ihrem konkreten Gebrauch in einer Sprache existieren. Gebrauchsbasierte Grammatiktheorien hingegen beschäftigen sich mit der Art und Weise, wie der Gebrauch von sprachlichen Strukturen einen Einfluss auf die mentale Grammatik von Sprecher:innen der Sprache hat. In dieser Vorlesung werden wir uns prominente gebrauchsbasierte Grammatikmodelle erarbeiten. So werden wir mit Hilfe emergentistischer Theorien den Einfluss von Gebrauchshäufigkeit, Aktivierung (sog. Priming) und Salienz auf die Grammatik erörtern. Wir werden die Konstruktionsgrammatik als eine gebrauchsbasierte Grammatiktheorie kennenlernen, die diese kognitiven Effekte in ihre Erklärungsmodelle inkorporiert. Letztens werden wir mit Hilfe der interaktionalen Linguistik die Verfestigung interaktionaler Routinen im Gespräch, aus der grammatische Muster entstehen können, analysieren. Das Ziel der Vorlesung ist es, die Gemeinsamkeiten dieser theoretischen Ansätze herauszustellen und uns anhand von Fallbeispielen einer gebrauchsbasierten Grammatik anzunähern.

17075 S Grammatikalisierungsprozesse im Spanischen, Di 10:00-12:00

Sprachen wandeln sich in der Zeit. Aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Perspektive können dabei verschiedene Prozesse beobachtet und analysiert werden. Hierzu zählt unter anderem die Entwicklung, dass lexikalische Elemente ihre semantische Bedeutung verlieren und grammatische Funktionen übernehmen (Grammatikalisierung), wie in Altspanisch cantar he ‚Ich habe zu singen‘ > Spanisch cantaré ‚ich werde singen‘. In diesem Seminar beleuchten wir Grammatikalisierungsprozesse im Spanischen. Hierzu analysieren wir insbesondere pragmatisch und interaktional orientierte Theorien des Bedeutungswandels, gehen aber auch auf grundlegende kognitive Prozesse und die Rolle von Sprachkontakt ein. Wir betrachten darüber hinaus verwandte Sprachwandelprozesse wie die Möglichkeit, dass grammatische Einheiten Funktionen entwickeln, die auf die Organisation der Interaktion gerichtet sind (Pragmatikalisierung).

Die Bedeutung und Form sprachlicher Äußerungen ist wesentlich durch ihre Einbettung im Diskurs bedingt. Obwohl im folgenden Beispiel sowohl die Antworten (a) als auch (b) die zur Beantwortung von A’s Frage nötige Information beitragen, ist aufgrund der Unterschiede in der Intonation nur Antwort (a) angemessen.

A: WEM hattest Du noch mal das Buch gegeben?

B: a. Ich habe es MICHI gegeben.

b. Ich habe Michi das BUCH gegeben.

Die semantische, syntaktische und lautliche „Verpackung“ (Chafe 1976) von Informationen in Sätzen hängt also von zeitlich begrenzten mentalen Zuständen der Gesprächsteilnehmer:nnen ab. So macht im obigen Beispiel des spezifische Erkenntnisinteresse der Sprecher*in A den Akzent auf MICHI relevant. Andere mentale Parameter, die einen Einfluss auf die Informationsstruktur von Sätzen haben, sind die Vorerwähntheit bzw. Aktiviertheit sprachlicher Elemente und die thematische Struktur eines Textes oder Diskurses. Es gibt weitreichende Unterschiede in der Versprachlichung von Informationsstruktur zwischen den germanischen und romanischen Sprachen. Diese Unterschiede sind ein klassisches Problem für deutsche Lerner romanischer Sprachen. So lässt sich die Akzentsetzung im obigen Beispiel nicht 1:1 in die spanische Sprache übertragen; hier müssen wir uns spezifischer grammatischer Phänomene wie der Nachstellung (le he dado el libro a MICHI) bedienen. Ziel des Seminars ist die Herausarbeitung zentraler informationsstruktureller Konzepte und deren Anwendung auf das Spanische.

Der Kurs führt grundlegend in wesentliche Begriffe und analytische Verfahren der synchronischen Sprachwissenschaft ein. Im Vergleich zum Grundkurs A ist dieser Kurs bei weitem stärker auf die konkrete Analyse sprachlicher Gegenstände eingerichtet. Präsentationen und ausgewählte Texte aus der Literatur bereiten Übungen vor, die wir im Seminar besprechen.

Self-description

I am a linguist with a focus on the Ibero-Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan). I am currently a Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded research project "Experimental Replication of Historical Reanalysis Processes" (see below).

My research interests lie in the description and explanation of variation and change in the grammar of Romance languages. My research is based on the central premise that linguistic structures emerge in the context of social interaction. Since historical written texts provide only indirect evidence for processes of social interaction, my research uses quantitative corpus linguistics and psycholinguistic methods to demonstrate the effects of real interactional processes on the formation of language structures. Another research focus is on the spoken grammar of Romance languages within the interactional Linguistics paradigm.

Experimental replication of historical reanalysis processes (EXREAN)

Background - In historical linguistics, reanalysis is described as the process by which speakers assign a new meaning to a formally unchanged element. Reanalysis is a meaning change that leads to grammar change. However, due to the methodological difficulty of studying change on the basis of historical texts and limitations in the understanding of associated social processes, current research struggles to explain both why and when reanalysis occurs and why it spreads between speakers.

Aim - EXREAN has three main innovative objectives: (a) to develop a methodology that allows replicating historical reanalysis processes in a laboratory setting, (b) to determine in which context types reanalysis occurs, (c) to determine which social, language-specific, and individual determinants favor or disfavor reanalysis and its actualization.

Approach - The EXREAN project is the first of its kind to systematically examine reanalysis and actualization processes in a laboratory setting. EXREAN brings together and integrates insights from historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and social psychology. Using experimental paradigms from natural language comprehension and artificial language learning, participants from typologically diverse languages will be trained to replicate three attested historical reanalysis processes from different grammatical domains. The project will test the hypothesis that reanalysis processes can be predicted from exposure to bridging contexts, social factors such as arousal and familiarity, individual differences in habit tendency, and blocking effects arising from previous experience with language.

Innovation and impact - EXREAN breaks new ground by developing a methodology by which hypotheses on processes of language change can be submitted to rigorous testing. It will establish the necessity to define reanalysis not only as a cognitive, but also as a social process. In doing so, EXREAN will establish a new historical linguistics that understands itself as a predictive science.
