Workshop der DFG-Projekte „Deutsche Mystik in Übersetzung. Die Erfindung einer europäischen Idee“ (SPP 2130 „Übersetzungskulturen der Frühen Neuzeit“)

Philosophers often appeal to the imagination of readers to visualize particularly difficult ideas. Sometimes actual images accompany philosophical works, but their status can vary: images can function as a means for explaining the content of a text, or as an alternative to the text itself. The latter case can be particularly useful when philosophical ideas need to be transmitted independently from words altogether, for instance when approaching a readership which would not have access to the written text. This workshop is devoted to discussing the varied functions of images as a philosophical tool. We are particularly interested in cases in which the images are more than a mere representation of the text, and instead work as a theoretical counterpoint to the texts.

The workshop will also be an occasion to discuss a main case study at the centre of our research project, namely the rich and creative images designed by the philosopher and theologian Dionysius Andreas Freher (1649–1728). Our team is editing Freher’s An Explication of Three Very Different Tables, a treatise extant in various versions, and with an extremely refined visual counterpart: three pop-up tables, which were intended to accompany viewers on a philosophical journey of spiritual renewal. Freher is in this context a case study for asking broader questions about the methods used throughout early modernity and modernity for visualising philosophy, and ultimately for philosophising with images.
