The interdisciplinary Master's Programme 'Linguistics' at IZ-ZEUS (previously 'Languages of Europe')

The Master's programme “Linguistics” offers the graduates who have a philological bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification the opportunity to deepen and expand their knowledge of linguistics at a high level. This is accomplished through a specialisation in structural, historical and usage-related aspects of European languages, also through comparisons with non-European languages.

The degree programme offers in-depth academic education in current research areas of linguistics, oriented towards complex problems; it teaches subject-specific theoretical and methodological skills and offers guidance on research strategies for both specialized and interdisciplinary work. Within the framework of interdisciplinary academic events, the program trains academic judgement and promotes the willingness to engage in creative and open interdisciplinary dialogue. In addition, the program offers extensive, high level training in usually two modern European languages.

Graduates find their professional fields in linguistic research (doctorates, research institutions, etc.), as well as language experts with a European focus and a high level of foreign language competence in the media or journalism, politics (EU, language policy), etc.

Admission requirement is a first degree professional qualification from a higher education institution in a philological program with at least 20 ECTS in linguistics as well as a very good command of English and knowledge of (at least) one other foreign language.

The Master's degree course in Linguistics is organised and supervised by the Interdisciplinary Centre "European Languages: Structures - Development - Comparison (ZEUS)".
