Linguistics
The study of linguistics and English language at our department covers many different aspects, ranging from phonetics and phonology, their interaction with syntax, and language comparison (English-German contrastive linguistics as well as typological studies taking into account large samples of languages), to sociolinguistic issues relating to varieties of English worldwide. In the course of a BA or MA degree, students will learn how to apply the analysis of sounds, words, sentences and discourse structures to English and in this way acquire a broad knowledge of the English language system, as well as aspects of language use in context.
