Admission requirements

For admittance to the master’s programme applicants need to fulfill the following admission requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a German or foreign higher education institution with a content of at least 20 credit points in linguistics. Language acquisition courses, translation or socio-cultural courses are not considered as linguistics and credits gained in those can therefore not be considered.
  • In addition, proof of language skills is required:
    • Proof of language skills in German  (C1 CEFR or equivalent for application and DSH-2 for regular immatriculation)
    • Proof of language skills in English (B2 CEFR receptive).

These requirements may also be fulfilled by native languages, in which case no proof of language competence is required. Instead, it must become apparent from other application documents that the native language is either German or English.

It is possible to apply with a yet incomplete degree if the following conditions are met (§ 2, paragraph 5 of the Study Place Allocation of the master's programme 'Linguistics'):

  • As a substitute, a current transcript of records covering at least 2/3 of the mandatory study program with a linguistics content of at least 14 credit points. Also, the subject of the thesis must already have been issued.

  • In case of submission, the diploma must be submitted within the first semester.

The admission is conditional.
