Study Abroad at Indiana University Bloomington
The FSGS maintains an exchange agreement with the Department of Germanic Studies at Indiana University (College of Arts and Sciences). Each year, one position is available for a “visiting scholar.” The stay must last at least one semester (15 weeks) and may be extended to up to one year.
Would you like to spend time abroad at Indiana University Bloomington? Then:
- Notify the FSGS office. Ideally, your stay should begin in late August (for the fall semester) or early January (for the spring semester). Application documents must be submitted to the office at least five months prior to the planned stay to allow sufficient time for visa arrangements.
- Compile your application materials, including a letter of motivation, an outline of your doctoral project (in German or English), and a CV in English. Please submit your application by email to the FSGS office (with the CV as a separate PDF file).
- Ask your supervisory team to provide a brief statement of support for your stay abroad via email to the FSGS office.
- Check the visa requirements for the USA and ensure that your passport is valid for the entire duration of your planned stay.
- Contact your health insurance provider to verify whether you will be covered during your stay in the USA. Your insurance must meet Indiana University’s requirements; otherwise, you may be required to purchase additional coverage through the university at your own expense.
