Academy of the Arts, Berlin
The Aesthetics of Applied Theatre
The project funded by the European Research Council systematically explores the field of current forms of applied theatre, which set in motion constructive social processes while upholding theatre’s aesthetic claim. Theatre with clear social, political, or economic aims is experiencing an unprecedented boom. The study analyses this cross-cultural trend against the background of new theories of the aesthetics of performances and rehearsal processes. In four sub-projects – Theatre in Education, Theatre in Conflict Zones, Theatre as Therapy, and Corporate Theatre –, it aims to show how aesthetic, political, and ethical aspects interact in the practice of applied theatre.
International Research Training Group: Interart Studies
The IRTG "InterArt" focuses on the promotion and encouragement of the next academic generation. PhD candidates come together with professors and postdoctoral researchers to discuss the IRTG’s major topic. They complete the doctoral program "Interart Studies" and are individually supervised and trained. The IRTG "Interart" has been a member of the Dahlem Research School of the FU Berlin since October 2009.

German Centre of the International Theatre Institute
The German Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), a promoter of cultural exchange world-wide, is currently the largest international network for the performing arts. As a non-governmental organisation created by UNESCO in 1948, it has offices in more than 100 countries. Its General Secretariat is based in Paris. The German ITI develops and supports international cultural co-operation by providing information services and organising international encounters, specialists’ conferences, theatre festivals (i.e. THEATER DER WELT in Germany), and workshops centred around various aspects of the performing arts.
Europäische Gemeinschaft für kulturelle Angelegenheiten [European Community for Cultural Affairs]
The Europäische Gemeinschaft für kulturelle Angelegenheiten (EGFKA), an initiative of scholars and artists, comes forward with theatre performances, discussions, conferences, seminars, courses, trainings and workshops. The intention is to establish a multidimensional and inter-media debate on economy, finance and the Euro crisis, both on the level of content and aesthetics, with a view to creating, together with audiences from Berlin and theatre makers from European countries most affected by the crisis, an oppositional public sphere opposing one-sided and stigmatising media coverage.
Haus der Kulturen der Welt
The Haus der Kulturen der Welt is a place for international contemporary arts and a forum for current developments and discourse. It presents artistic productions from around the world, with a special focus on non-European cultures and societies. Visual arts, music, literature, performing arts, film, academic discussions and digital media are all linked in an interdisciplinary programme that is unique in Europe. In a time when local and national issues are inextricably tied to international developments, the Haus enables the voices of the world to be heard in their great diversity and gives them a productive place in the inner-societal dialogue.
Academy of the Arts
The Academy of the Arts promotes art and advises and supports the Federal Republic of Germany in matters of art and culture. The Academy is dedicated to both, the introduction of new artistic trends and the preservation of cultural heritage. As part of these tasks, it organises, amongst other things, art and documentary exhibitions, workshops, concerts, lectures, readings as well as film, theater and dance performances. An essential component of the Academy is its archive, whose collection covers the history of the Academy of the Arts in Berlin.
Berliner Festspiele
The Berliner Festspiele organize a multiplicity of highly specialized festivals, exhibition projects and individual events. Its activities are devoted to the presentation of exceptional contemporary artistic positions in the field of music, the performing arts, the visual arts and literature. The Berliner Festspiele work with numerous curators and jurors who realize projects at the Martin Gropius Bau and at various festivals: MaerzMusik, Theatertreffen, Musikfest Berlin, Foreign Affairs and Jazzfest. The Berliner Festspiele are producers as well as hosts and partners to a range of national and international institutions – from the Berlinale to Berghain, from the Sophiensäle to New York City’s MoMA. As an institution of the German federal government, the primary task of the Berliner Festspiele is to stimulate exchange between the inner and the outer, between the individual and society.
Ballhaus Naunynstraße
The Ballhaus Naunynstraße – re-opened as a trans-local theatre in 2008 – is a focal point for artists of migrant and post-migrant background. It enriches the cultural landscape of Berlin through regular premieres and world premieres of their own productions and collaborations, many international guest performances, a large number of interdisciplinary projects, film series, lectures, discussions, concerts, festivals and local projects on art education. Among other aspects, the Ballhaus Naunynstraße focuses on youth development with the aim of creating more experimental opportunities for the new artistic approaches of young talent.
Tanzfabrik Berlin
Tanzfabrik Berlin functions as an internationally renowned center for contemporary dance. It offers a space for rehearsals, productions, artistic and scholarly research, advanced training, higher education, workshops and regular classes. Its main aim is to focus on the development, presentation and agency of contemporary dance, taking into account the most diverse choreographic and performative approaches. This includes the promotion of young artists, the connection of theory and practice and international exchange.
Dahlem Humanities Center
The Dahlem Humanities Center (DHC) has set itself the goal of comprising the most complete range of disciplines in the humanities to be found in Germany. At the same time, its mission is to foster networks at both the regional and the international level. In order to achieve this, it will launch a host of innovative programs and event series in close collaboration with its regional and international partner institutions.
Artists-in-Berlin Program DAAD
The Artists-in-Berlin Program – or the »Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD« – is one of the most renowned international programs in the city. It offers a one-year grant to artists in the field of visual arts, literature, music or film. It defines itself as a forum for artistic dialogue that extends beyond cultural, geographical and, especially, political borders. Since 1963, this forum has been highly successful and lively not only through the work and presence of the artists but also through the multifaceted events hosted by the Berliner Künstlerprogramm.

Institute for Advanced Study Berlin
The Institute for Advanced Study Berlin offers internationally recognized researchers and promising younger scientists and scholars the opportunity to concentrate, free of constraints and duties, on work projects of their own choice for one academic year. The approximately forty Fellows comprise a temporary learning community characterized by diversity of discipline, by internationality, and by interculturality.
American Academy
The American Academy in Berlin is one of Europe’s most visible and effective institutions of transatlantic dialogue and has built up an extensive and enduring network in the corporate, political, academic, and cultural communities in the United States and in Germany. Its cross-cultural, interdisciplinary environment and creative programming have made the Academy a highly regarded center in Germany and beyond.
Forum Transregionale Studien [Forum Transregional Studies]
The Forum Transregionale Studien is a Berlin-based research platform designed to promote research that connects systematic and region-specific questions in a perspective addressing entanglements and interactions beyond national, cultural, and regional frames. The programs at the Forum aim to contribute to strengthening collaboration between researchers from different disciplines, institutional structures, and national or regional research traditions in and outside of Berlin.

Max Planck Institute for the History of Science
The MPIWG in Berlin is one of eighty research institutes in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities administered by the Max Planck Society. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science investigate how new categories of thought, proof, and experience have emerged in the centuries-long interaction between the sciences and their ambient cultures.
Zentrum Moderner Orient
The Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) is the only German research institute devoted to an interdisciplinary and comparative study of the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, South and Southeast Asia from a historical perspective. Current research focuses on the interaction between predominantly Muslim societies and their relations with non-Muslim neighbours.
Collaborative Research Center 640: Repräsentationen sozialer Ordnungen im Wandel [Representations of Changing Social Orders]
The researchers at the Collaborative Research Centre examine representations of changing social orders. They understand representations as a means to organize and communicate knowledge. Their core aim is to analyse processes of the exchange of representations in order to determine the origins of social orders. They conduct studies on a variety of regions and periods of time.
Collaborative Research Center 626: Aesthetic Experience and the Dissolution of Artistic Limits
The collaborative research centre on Aesthetic Experience and the Dissolution of Artistic Limits has been working at the Freie Universität Berlin since January 2003. The overall objective of the CRC throughout the three funding periods has been the reciprocal exposition of (a) the concept of aesthetic experience, (b) the status of art and the aesthetic in the recent past and present, with comparative recourse to classical modernism and earlier epochs, and (c) the relationship of the arts to one another.
