Dr. Jordi Sanchez-Martí (Universität Alicante): The publication of chivalric romances in English, 1473–1535

Abstract:

Surprisingly, the first book printed in English was printed in the Low Countries. Willian Caxton, the first English printer, published his first book in English in Bruges: a romance, which had been the most popular genre of secular literature. This talk will discuss the ways in which romance narratives were distributed in print in England by printers with an important continental background, including Wynkyn de Worde and Gheraert Leeu besides Caxton himself.
