Thesis Defense Training

29.10.2026 - 30.10.2026

In their thesis defense, doctoral students have to present a summary of their research to a board of examiners and then answer critical questions. This course is designed to prepare the participants optimally for this situation. The goal of the course is mainly to help them prepare central elements for the summary of their research that they have to present in the thesis defense, so the course can also be helpful for participants who are still in the writing-phase.

Content

  • the opening of the thesis defense presentation
  • how to structure the thesis defense presentation
  • building valid and sound arguments
  • handling difficult questions
  • presentations from participants and mock defense

Objective

  • give a convincing and well-structured presentation
  • respond confidently to critical questions
  • are well prepared and feel confident about their thesis defense

Methods
All contents are developed interactively, and they are applied directly to the participants' research topics. Participants prepare essential elements of their thesis defense presentation already during the course (e.g. the opening, the main message, and the central argument).

Participation on both days is mandatory.
