Guidelines for Term Papers and Exams
Guidelines on the use of AI tools in coursework and examinations
The Council and the academic staff of the Institute for English Language and Literature have agreed not to permit the use of AI tools in coursework and examinations at the institute. Students are expected to demonstrate in these assignments that they are capable of independently formulating academic questions, researching the state of research, collecting data, analysing the subject matter with relevant academic methods and theories, and presenting their findings in an appropriate linguistic manner. Consequently, AI tools are also prohibited for literature reviews, structuring the essay/thesis, and its linguistic and stylistic revision.
Should different regulations apply to individual courses (e.g. in courses or examinations where AI is the subject of the study), this must be explicitly communicated by the respective lecturers.
This guideline is intended to provide clear guidance to both teaching staff and students, and to ensure comparability of academic performance. The responsible use of AI (e.g. in a future career) requires the acquisition of the fundamental subject-specific competences set out in the study and examination regulations. Only on this basis can the quality of AI generated suggestions be assessed appropriately.
