Guidelines for Term Papers and Exams

Guidelines for the use of AI tools in coursework and examinations

The Board and teaching staff of the Institute for English Language and Literature have agreed not to permit the use of AI tools in coursework and examinations. In these assignments students are expected to demonstrate that they are able to independently develop scholarly questions, explore the state of research, collect data, analyse the objects of study with the relevant methods and theories in the field, and present their findings in an appropriate linguistic form. Therefore AI tools are also not permitted for literature research, structuring of term papers, and linguistic and stylistic revision.

Deviations from this rule in individual courses (e.g. courses or examinations that focus on AI) must be explicitly communicated by the respective lecturers.

This guideline is intended to offer a clear guidance to both lecturers and students and to ensure the comparability of student performance. A responsible use of AI (e.g. in a future profession) requires the acquisition of the academic skills and knowledge as described in the study and examination regulations. Only on this basis can the quality of AI generated results be adequately assessed.

If you have any questions about this regulation, please don’t hesitate to contact the current director of the institute, Professor Sabine Schülting (sabine.schuelting@fu-berlin.de).
