Grammar
The Grammar division explores the systematic development of modern German, with a special focus on the functions performed by grammatical structures in language use. Grammar is viewed as a symbolic system resulting from social interaction and historical tradition that can be reconstructed by observing how language is used. Language use in various situations may serve as the object of observation, including in both written and oral mediums. German is also compared to Dutch and English, which can help elucidate the structure and development of the language being studied.
