The discipline Language Education explores language and its usage as both an object and a medium of learning. Using theoretical and empirical linguistic methods, the programme focuses on speaking and listening as well as reading and writing, not only as distinct, clearly separable activities but also as processes that are interdependent. Furthermore, the programme examines how textual, discourse, and argumentation skills can be promoted using current forms of interactional, multimodal, and digital communication in everyday and knowledge-based contexts. A central aspect of our research and teaching is the overarching question of how German language teaching based on pedagogical principles can contribute to promoting both literacy as an educational goal with a focus on social competence (Literalität) and education for sustainable development.
