Study Abroad at the University of Cambridge

The FSGS has an exchange agreement with the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and Lingustics at the University of Cambridge.

Would you like to spend time abroad at the University of Cambridge next year? Then:
  • Inform our office by January 31st
  • Compile your application documentsand submit them as one PDF file by email to our office by email (one PDF file). The application should include:
    • Letter of motivation (English)

    • Outline of your PhD project (German or English)

    • CV (English)

  • Ask your primary supervisor to send a short statement of support for your stay abroad by email to our office
  • Check with your insurance provider whether you are covered during your stay in the UK

February/March: the FSGS will inform you about your nomination.

March/April: The partner university will contact applicants. Your English proficiency will be assessed. The University of Cambridge accepts the following certificates:

  • IELTS: overall score of  7.5, with at least 7.0 in each component
  • TOEFL iBT: overal score of 110, with at least 25 in each component
  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency: grade A or B
  • Cambridge English: C2 Proficiency, minimum overall score of 200, with no component below 185

Alternatively, you may take the English test offered by the University of Cambridge for exchange students, which consists of a written part (online) and a conversational part (by phone).

If you can provide a valid certificate or successfully pass the English test, you will be asked to complete the online application form. Please upload the following documents (in English):

  • letter of recommendation
  • preliminary transcript
  • learning agreement
  • CV
  • copy of passport
  • photo

If you are interested in a stay at the University of Cambridge, please contact our office. We will be happy to provide experience reports from our internal collection.

Report

Upon your return, please submit a short report to the office. This can be a simple collection of bullet points that may be helpful for future participants. These notes will be collected and shared internally only.
