The Division of Film Studies

The Devision of Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin works in a key interdisciplinary field in the humanities. From history to literature, cultural studies, and social studies, many areas of the humanities have long since included critical examination of audiovisual images as one of their areas of focus. Whether the audience is concerned with issues of politics or life in society, art, or entertainment, an understanding of culture and society seems to be predicated on understanding the ways in which audiovisual images are presented in the media.

This means that the study of the forms, both new and old, that the art of film and cinematic entertainment have taken over the years forms the essential basis for an ever-broadening range of different understandings of the mental activity of the images: Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin covers not only the history, aesthetics, and theory of film and audiovisual media in general, but also the conditions under which film is created and the circumstances of its effectiveness, including the interdependence of various cultural and aesthetic systems (literature, painting, theater, dance, music, etc.). That being the case, the various subjects treated by Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin can truly be grasped only from an interdisciplinary standpoint.

The Division of Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin offers an outstanding research environment. It is involved in various interdisciplinary research projects – such as collaborative research centers and research training groups – funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and through the German government’s Excellence Initiative.

The Division of Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin offers two courses of study: the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Master of Arts (M.A.), which is open to holders of bachelor’s degrees. Both programs are free to students, with no tuition or fees assessed.

Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies

The course of study toward the B.A. in Film Studies provides students not only with a general academic education, but also with qualifications for a wide range of different professions, both established and emerging, that are involved with audiovisual media culture in the film, television, and advertising sectors and in journalistic, artistic, and academic fields of endeavor. In particular, graduates of this program have the skills and ability to evaluate, analyze, program, and carry out conceptual development of audiovisual forms of depiction.

Master of Arts in Film Studies

The course of study toward the M.A. in Film Studies picks up where the bachelor program in film studies (or a comparable program) has left off, and is heavily research-oriented. This program provides students above all with the qualifications necessary to conduct research and teaching activities in film studies. With its content closely interlinked with other fields of study in the arts and media, and the subject matter itself, this program provides students with a solid methodology for the examination of aesthetics, forms, and effects of audiovisual image media. Along with preparing graduates for later doctoral studies, the program aims to provide students with the skills to conduct highly qualified theoretical and academic activities, which are in demand in a wide array of different cultural fields.
