In autumn 2017 the PathoGraphics research project based at the Freie Universität Berlin will be holding an exhibition at the Berlin Museum of Medical History at the Charité to introduce the growing genre of graphic illness narratives to a wider German audience. Illustrators, doctors, cartoonists, patients, healthcare professionals, artists, authors and caregivers are invited to submit self-contained comics dealing with illness, disability or caregiving. Our goal is to have an international range of contributions, spanning of the illness experience from the perspective of patient, artists, and medical professionals.
Comics are a democratic medium; therefore works chosen should reproduce at a minimum of 300dpi in A0 (1189mm x 841mm) and A1 (594 mm x 841mm) formats. PDF, TIFF and JPG format submissions will be accepted; we strongly suggest that submissions be in both landscape and portrait formats.
Please pay strict attention to submission guidelines: multiple page entries and/or entire graphic novels or works in other formats will be automatically disqualified.
Works will be exhibited amidst six rows of glass cabinets containing pathological-anatomical wet and dry specimens on the second floor of the museum. Because specimen displays are grouped according to anatomical system, if you are addressing a particular illness or system, it would be helpful to point this out with your submission.
Chosen works will also be considered for inclusion in a subsequent publication.
