The Art of Protest

In recent protest movements a new interrelation between politics and the arts has become manifest. Instantaneous choreographies of bodies in public spaces, provisional stages and tent cities providing experimental sites for political negotiation and the embodiment of radical democracy: Contemporary political protest movements are inseparably linked to artistic means which, in return, determine the material and symbolic constitution of public space. This lecture series focuses on this new aesthetic of protest and respective forms of politics. It examines the mutual transformations of art and the public sphere that are being created through the poetic, visual, and performative materialization of politics in global protest movements.
