General guidelines

Welcome to Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School at FU Berlin! In this section, you will find basic information on the doctorate program at FSGS. Please send us an e-mail as soon as you know the date of your arrival in Berlin. We are going to arrange an appointment then, show you round the Graduate School and provide support in completing the proposals for access to WLAN, the canteen, libraries, etc.

We also gladly help you with the temporary enrollment into our study program "Literary Studies". Please find information on the enrollment in the Gateway for Doctoral Candidates.

General information on the organization of your stay in Berlin are available at the central website of FU Berlin or at the DRS Welcome Service page. DRS Welcome Service provides advice on visa and right of residence matters as well.

Choosing courses / Integration into the Graduate School

FSGS offers you the opportunity to take part in colloquia where you can present and discuss your project. Furthermore, seminars are offered you can participate in. The majority of the courses is held in German.

Besides the curricular offerings, you may take part in workshops and conferences and get involved in their organization or execution with your own presentation. The joint reading group of FSGS members provides casual access to the internal in-depth discussions. Every Tuesday at 12 p.m., the Schlegel members meet for the noon forum for lunch, socializing and seeing a short presentation. The current program is available on this website.

On request, the Graduate School supplies you with a workplace in one of the doctoral students' rooms. The more you are working in the Graduate School's rooms, the easier you are going to get into contact with the other doctoral students. We do not provide a PC but a BookEye scanner in the Philological Library free of charge and a central printer and copier in the Graduate School.

If you are doing a doctorate at one of our partner universities and are coming to us on the basis of a partnership contract, we reimburse enrollment and semester fees. Please hand in bills and receipts in the School's office.

If you have further questions, please send us an e-mail or visit us (room JK 33/110).

ECTS credit points

You can acquire 2 ECTS by taking part in the FSGS courses (colloquia, seminars) amounting to 2 SWS = two semester periods per week.

Transcript of Records (ToR)

At the end of your stay, we issue a Transcript of Records for your home university on request. Please come to the School's office (room JK 33/111) and bring all the relevant documents.

These documents are required to issue the ToR:

  • Please download the Transcript of Records here in German or English and complete it. Print it and hand it over to us or send it via e-mail.
  • Hand in or send us participation certificates for the courses you have visited. Please download the certificates, print and complete them and submit them to the course instructor for signing.
