Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School supports its members (doctoral candidates, PostDocs, professors) administratively and financially in the planning and realization of a stay abroad. Scholarship holders of the Graduate School have a travelling expenses budget which they may use in accordance with their supervision team for stays abroad and conference travellings.
Associated PostDocs, who do not command own material expenses, may, as well as PIs of the Graduate School, hand in an application to the School's board. The travellings should serve one's own project (PostDocs) or take place within the partnership framework of FSGS (PI).
For the doctoral candidates, a stay abroad is part of the curriculum, but does not need to be executed. Together with the supervision team, we advise the doctoral candidates if and in which form a stay abroad might be useful for the dissertation project and one's career. We recommend to go abroad in the second year of study. Plannings should start one year ahead.
In general, you can choose any university approved in Germany (Anabin) for your stay abroad. If there is no contract in place between Freie Universität Berlin or FSGS with this university, doctoral students or their supervisors should maintain good contacts with the relevant department, as you need to obtain an invitation guaranteeing that there will be no tuition fees raised. For PostDocs, fees for a research stay are usually not raised. The Graduate School's office provides support in the initiation of this process.
As doctoral students/researchers at Freie Universität Berlin you have manifold opportunities for stays abroad that are already confirmed by contracts. The contracts regulate that no tuition fees will be raised and that you get administrative support from the relevant department. You need to apply as a doctoral student for the places available within these programmes and adhere to the relevant deadlines. Partly, these exchange places are connected with scholarships. If applicable, you need to interrupt your scholarship at FSGS (proposal to the board). By no means, arisen costs can be billed twice or two scholarships paid out at the same time. In such cases, please do come to the School's office early enough. PostDocs may refer to these contracts when they get in touch with a university and ask for opportunities of research stays. Please do inform the the School's office before establishing contacts. We provide support and collaborate with Abt. IV (Internationale Angelegenheiten) of Freie Universität Berlin.
As members of FSGS you may use the School's partnerships for your stay abroad. With our contracts, doctoral students have two exchange places at the listed institutions per year. A request of demand is forwarded in Mid-January by the School's office.
Lecturers may execute stays with teaching obligations lasting several weeks via the partnerships. This applies especially to the cooperation with the universities in Cambridge and Oxford. Please contact the School's office. We gladly give advice. All relevant information on Erasmus teaching stays may be found on the Website of Abt. IV.
