Language certificates


  1. TestDaF (level 4 in all four examinations)

  2. Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or C2 ("Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom) of any Goethe Institute

  3. "Deutsches Sprachdiplom II der Kultusministerkonferenz" (DSD II)

  4. Successful completion of a degree course in a German speaking country

  5. School leaving certificate that is equivalent to the German University entrance certificate (Abitur)


Regarding language proficiency in English, the following certificates are accepted as proof of European reference level B2:

  1. A certificate of seven years of English language instruction at school

  2. IELTS 5.0

  3. Cambridge Examinations: First Certificate (FCE); Advanced (CAE); Proficiency (CPE)

  4. TOEFL: Paper 500, or Computer 170, or Internet 80

If you plan to write you dissertation in one of the Romance philologies, please make sure to provide the proof of your proficiency in Latin and one additional Romance language. That makes two modern Romance languages and Latin. Make sure your application meets the regulations.
Please also note: Should you plan to write your dissertation in a foreign language, a proviciency level of C1 GER is required in this language.
